Rex Kalehoff is a New Yorker living in Luxembourg who creates sculptures that are functional & resemble items from ancient times. We are very lucky to secure Rex for this 2 day weekend workshop while he is travelling in Australia. Rex will work with participants to sculpt, carve & build this original Lamp base. Participants will learn to design and create their ideas while using a variety of hand tools and machines in Australian hardwood timber at the Illawarra Woodwork school workshop.

The emphasis of this workshop is to create a 3 D sculptural object that is functional while using a mixture of hand tools & machines. Rex believes in using the best tool to get the best result. This lamp will enable participants to find their creative voice whilst learning the technical side of unfamiliar tools and the sculpting process. 

This simple table lamp consists of 12 hand-carved panels, or slats, cross-lapped into a central disk, which holds the lamp hardware. The design of the panels is completely customizable, and achieved by band-sawing the profile, then shaping the edges with appropriate tools: carving knives, chisels, gouges, spoke-shaves, files, rasps, rotary and grinding tools, and even router table. Participants can choose from a wide range of carving tools and shaping techniques. This project is a great exercise in repetitive carving, where you want parts to look consistent and similar. Use your creativity and carving skills to create a unique lamp!

This 2 day weekend workshop is for the absolute beginner to the advanced woodworker, Over 16 years only.
